What Is Cash Runway?
Cash runway refers to the period, usually expressed in months, that your business can sustain its operations based on its current cash reserves and its average monthly spending, also known as its 'cash burn rate.' In simpler terms, it answers the question: "How long can my business survive if no new money comes in, but expenses continue?" This metric is particularly vital for small businesses, startups, and companies that are not yet consistently profitable or have highly variable revenues. A strong cash runway provides a buffer, giving you time to adjust strategies, secure new funding, or boost sales before facing a cash crunch. It does not account for future sales or investments, rather, it's a snapshot based on existing cash and spending patterns. It's a proactive tool for financial management, not a reactive one after problems arise.
