What Is Efficient Frontier?
The Efficient Frontier is a set of optimal portfolios that offer the highest possible expected return for a given level of risk, or the lowest possible risk for a given expected return. Imagine plotting various investment portfolios on a graph where the vertical axis represents expected return (the profit you hope to make) and the horizontal axis represents risk (how much variation or uncertainty there is in those returns, often measured by standard deviation). The Efficient Frontier is a curve that connects all the 'best' portfolios. Any portfolio below this curve is considered sub-optimal because you could either achieve the same return with less risk or a higher return with the same risk. Any portfolio above the curve is theoretically impossible to achieve given the current assets available. For a small business owner, this means identifying the most effective way to combine different investments—like stocks, bonds, or real estate—to get the most bang for your buck, while staying within your acceptable risk boundaries. It's about smart diversification, making sure your eggs aren't all in one fragile basket.
