    How it works

Self-employed individuals owe two federal taxes: regular income tax on profit and self-employment tax (Social Security + Medicare, 15.3% up to the wage base). The IRS expects at least 90% of the current year's liability, or 100% (110% if AGI > 50k) of last year's, paid in via withholding and quarterly estimates. Miss those thresholds and you'll owe an underpayment penalty.

This tool applies 2025 single-filer brackets and the standard deduction. Married filing jointly and state tax are not included, talk to us for a full projection.

    Examples

    Freelancer, $80k profit

SE tax runs about 1.3k, income tax about $8.5k. Quarterly payments land near $5k.

Side hustle, $20k on top of W-2

SE tax is $2.8k; income tax depends on your W-2 bracket. Add ~ k/quarter to be safe.
